Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan, Dec 4 (Antaranews Kalsel) - A lawmaker hailed determination shown by the navy chief Admiral Marsetio to stamp out illegal fishing from the country.

"We hope problem faced by the navy in going after illegal fishing perpetrators in the past because of shortage of fuel should not happen again," Hermano of the PKS faction said.

"There must be no more warship lying idle for fuel being not available allowing foreign fishing vessels to freely stole our fish," Hermanto said.

He said Admiral Marsetio said the navy will be ready with war ships to render a big blow to illegal fishing as ordered by President Joko Widodo, he said.

He said in the past the navy could not use its force against illegal fishing because budget was not available for that purpose.

"Now, however, the problem had been sorted out A budget has been set aside for that purpose in the 2015 state budget," he said.

The World Food Organization (FAO) has said Indonesia suffers a potential; loss of Rp30 trillion a year becasue of illegal fishing every year.

The Minister for Marine and Fisheries Susi Pudjiastuti said the losses are even much larger .

"Based on some calculations illegal fishing has caused a loss of up to US$20 billion or Rp240 trillion a year," Hermanto said.

He said so far the government seemed to have no power only to deal with illegal fishing.

"We know there has been illegal fishing and we know the losses were big but we have done enough to cope with the problem," he said.

There are many have been caught but there are much more that escaped, he said. "As a result illegal fishing remain rampant," he said, adding, "we hope that the navy could be more effective in dealing with illegal fishing after the fuel problem has been sorted out," he added.
