A wildfire scorched two hectares of peatland area in Lamie Village, Darul Makmur Sub-district, Nagan Raya District, Aceh Province.

"We are still investigating the cause of the fire that razed a peatland area inside palm oil plantations owned by residents," Nagan Raya Police Chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Risno stated here on Tuesday afternoon.

A joint team comprising officers of the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI), police, local disaster mitigation office (BPBD), as well as local villagers were able to control the fire.

Nagan Raya District has been affected by prolonged drought for the past few months.

The police have urged the community to not burn land since the current hot weather is feared to cause forest and land fires.

"The peat fire is suspected to have been intentionally set by irresponsible people, but we are still investigating it," he added.
