President Joko Widodo appreciated the construction of Banjarbakula regional landfill, which is prepared to serve garbage processing for five districts and cities in South Kalimantan.

"We appreciate the construction of Banjarbakula regional landfill and it is hoped to overcome the handling of waste," he remarked as he inaugurated the landfill on Jalan Gunung Kupang Banjarbaru, Friday (Feb 7, 2020).

According to the president, what the South Kalimantan Provincial Government has done in the handling of waste for five districts and cities through the Banjarbakula landfill is worth an appreciation.

The five districts and cities are Banjarbaru City, Banjar District, Banjarmasin City, Barito Kuala District and Tanah Laut District which are the regional areas in the province.

"It is not easy to regulate the problem of garbage in a region, but what was done in South Kalimantan by combining waste management for several regions really should be appreciated," he said.

The Presiden hoped the integrated waste management that serves several regions can be emulated by other regions in Indonesia for better handling of waste.

Banjarbakula landfill lies about 15 kilometers from the center of Banjarbaru, is able of handling 790 tons of waste produced by 2,6  million inhabitants of the five regions per day.

It covers an area of 15 hectares and is calculated to be able to operate for the next 8 years. It has some facilities, such as 4 landfill cells, including leachate treatment unit.

The landfill was built since May 12, 2017, and has completed on November 30, 2018, with a budget of Rp149 billion in the form of a 2017-2018 multi-year contract.
