To reduce plastic waste, Tanah Bumbu District Government, South Kalimantan, prohibits the use of plastic as food and beverage packaging in meetings.
The prohibition is to implement a national policy on reducing plastic use mandated by Law No.18/2008 on waste management.
The Tanah Bumbu Assistant of Administration and People Welfare Mariani here on Monday (Jan 13, 2020) said, the ban is also on the basis of Regent Regulation No.5/2019 concerning reducing of use of plastic bag which then followed-up with a circular No.P/660.2/64/DLH-PSLB3.1.Bup/IV/2019 concerning the serving of meeting dish free of plastic packaging.
"The district government commitment is to reduce plastic waste should be a concern of government working units (SKPD) in Tanah Bumbu. One of the realization is the serving of meeting food free from plastic packaging," Mariani pointed out.

Not only the government agencies, but the circular also applies to private offices or companies. They advised to use organic or easily biodegradable materials, such as leaves or paper. They are also required to provide dispenser and glasses at every meeting.
In addition to ASN (government apparatus), employees, students, and school people are expected to bring their own tumblers and food containers.
The reducing of plastic use is to protect the district from pollution and environmental damage caused by the use of plastic bags, and to ensure the survival of living things and preservation of ecosystems.
