South Kalimantan Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) Chief Executive Wahyuddin said three residents were undergoing legal proceedings for allegedly burning land in the Banjar districts and Banjarbaru City for agriculture.


Wahyuddin after briefing all BPBD's employees in Banjarbaru on Wednesday said the three men were arrested by police for allegedly burning land around the Sungai Ulin (Banjarbaru) and Sungai Tabuk (Banjar).

"Then we will wait for the legal process, if it is proven to burn, they will be subject to sanctions in accordance with Regulation No. 1/2008, in the form of a 6-month jail and a fine of Rp50 million," he said.

The penalty will be more severe if the arson is carried out by the company.

As mandated by environmental law, sanctions for burning land in the form of prison for up to 3-5 years and a fine of billions of rupiah for companies.

Until now, the law enforcement team, is still exploring whether the land that is burned is their own or not, and what are the motives.

"It is hoped with this incident the community will not burn the forest or land under any pretext, including to open agricultural land," he hoped.

At present, the government is focusing on reducing land and forest fires, through various programs, one of which is the non-burning agricultural development program implemented by the South Kalimantan Peatland Restoration Agency.
