A number of factions in the legislative council questioned the policy of the North Hulu Sungai (HSU) government on the conversion of sustainable agricultural land to occur when the regional regulation governing it applies.

HSU Deputy Regent H. Husairi Abdi in Amuntai on Wednesday acknowledged article 35 of the draft regulation on the protection of the conversion of agricultural land. Indeed, all forms of licensing which resulted in the conversion of sustainable agricultural land were null and void.

"This provision certainly does not apply retroactively and is only binding after this regulation is enacted," Husairi said.

Husairi pointed out that building permits or location permits issued before the draft regulation could not be canceled even though they were in the area of sustainable food agriculture.

Furthermore, technical coordination in the control and supervision will be formed by a coordination team involving the relevant government agencies (SKPD).

Husairi emphasized that the regional government seeks not to take actions that could harm community groups or individuals who have obtained land use permits, both for housing and other businesses.

"Especially during this time the area of agriculture that has changed functions mostly resides in land which is included as an area of sustainable food agriculture," he explained.

Meanwhile, there is no plan for the local government to shift the function of conservation land to productive land, considering there are still many abandoned sleeping areas in the HSU that can still be used as productive agricultural land.

Whereas the main target areas that will be protected as sustainable food agricultural land protection are spread in nine sub-districts in wetland or processed food crop cultivation areas.
