Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan (Antaranews Kalsel) - Secretary of Commission II for the Economy and Finance of the South Kalimantan DPRD Imam Suprastowo said the desire to build a processing plant for latex or raw rubber materials in the province is still awaiting the results of the study.
"Without the results of prior studies, it is difficult to use the rubber raw material maximally or appropriately," he said to Antaranews Kalsel, Tuesday.
South Kalimantan, which covers an area of around 3.7 million hectares and inhabited by more than four million people spread across 13 districts and cities, has a quite potential rubber plantation.
But its market share is still export-oriented, so it cannot be separated from the international market play which can have an impact on falling commodity prices.
"The existence of a rubber factory in our area will not only bring added value to the regional government but also to the community, especially farmers," he said.
Rubber factories will also built with the aim of maintaining the stability of rubber prices in South Kalimantan, especially at farmer level.
During a working visit in Jakarta some time ago, the Commission II chaired by Suwardi Sarlan SAg came to the Directorate of Agro-Industry of the Ministry of Industry.
"In consultation with the Agro-Industry Directorate, we hope that South Kalimantan will get a share of the construction of a rubber processing plant," he continued.
"Because based on information, Indonesia is beginning to develop asphalt with raw materials from rubber, and the results are quite satisfying," said Imam Suprastowo.
