Banjarbaru, (Antaranews) - The Class I Banjarmasin Port Master (KSOP) provides shipping safety training to helmsmen and fishermen from all districts in South Kalimantan.
Head of Banjarmasin Port Master Bambang Gunawan after the opening of the training which cooperates with Surabaya Shipping Polytechnic and South Kalimantan Transportation Agency in Banjarbaru Tuesday (23/10) said the Ministry of Transportation instructed all KSOP heads to provide shipping safety training to minimize accidents.
"It was after a shipping accident in Lake Toba. Based on this, finally, all KSOPs were obliged to re-inform the shipping community about the importance of the safety of shipping," he said.
In South Kalimantan, he added, quite a number of shipping locations are similar to the location of Lake Toba, so it is also quite vulnerable to shipping accidents.
During the 10 months he served as head of KSOP in Banjarmasin there have been 10 shipping accidents on both large and small scale. It proved that the
level of vulnerability of marine accidents in South Kalimantan is quite high.
In the three days of training, participants were trained on how to deal with ship fires, how to deal with bad weather, how to leave the ship in damaged condition, by first saving passengers, and some other material.
Bambang said the training is free of charge, then all participants would be given a certificate, which showed that they had passed the training.
After this, he added, the training which followed by the helmsmen and fishermen from all regions, especially those in coastal areas, will be re-implemented with a total of around 400 participants.
