Kotabaru, S Kalimantan (ANTARA) - Kotabaru Regent H Muhammad Rusli has coordinated with Ministry of Forestry, specifically through the Directorate of Forest Area Change Planning and Forest Management Area Establishment (RPKHPWPH) in Jakarta regarding his plan to build ferry port.

The Regent said that with the condition of Kotabaru divided into two areas, Kotabaru Islands and Kotabaru mainland, connectivity between the two is still constrained, especially in the crossing sector.

"Currently, the existing crossings only rely on two private ports located on the right and left sides, with very limited capacity. While the flow of community crossings continues to increase rapidly," he said in Kotabaru, as reported Wednesday.

"People really expect a port owned by the local government that can be accessed easily," he said.

To answer this need, the Kotabaru government is planning the construction of a new port in the middle position, between the passenger port and the oil transport terminal.

The port will be managed by the regional-owned enterprise (perusda) based on the principle of "from the region for the community".

"We intend to build a port here, the name Kotabaru Local Government Port. We plan to operate ferries managed by perusda, so it is region for the region, from community to the community," he explained.

The local government has already opened and developed a route spanning approximately 2 kilometers from the government office center to the riverbank. However, after crossing the river, which is about 40-50 meters wide, there is a 2.5 kilometers road that lies within a nature reserve area.

He hopes that the nature reserve area can be converted to allow for an access road connecting to the mainland on Kalimantan Island.

The Regent targets the construction of this port to be realized before the end of his term.

For the construction of the port, which will connecting Sebelimbingan and Tarjun, his party has coordinated with the Transportation Office and is planned to receive budget support in 2028.

He emphasized that this is a fundamental need for the people of Kotabaru and asked the central government for help to provide support.
