Rantau, S Kalimantan (ANTARA) - Flooding has again inundated national road connecting Lokpaikat to Piani sub-districts, Tapin District, South Kalimantan, paralyzing activities in eight villages.

Flooding occurred after heavy rain in Tapin areas from 10.00 a.m to around 12.00 p.m. Water overflowed and blocked the road forcing drivers to stop for fear of breaking down.

Head of Commission I of Tapin DPRD Rustam Nawawi informed that emergency evacuation process was carried out using two mining company vehicles starting at 14.00 p.m. until the road was passable by two-wheeled vehicles.

“This is only temporary to help residents continue to travel safely,” said Rustam in Rantau, Tapin capital, Monday.

The flood has disrupted mobility for residents from Piani Sub-district to Rantau City and vice versa.

"Some residents didn't dare to cross. They waited on the side of road waiting for the water to recede," he told.

Rustam said flooding on this road continue to happen again every time heavy rain falls.

“The most affected are residents of eight villages in Piani Sub-district, because their access is disrupted,” he said.

The condition was worsened, he said, after alternative road previously used by residents was closed with no replace with adequate infrastructure.

Rustam hopes, mining companies operating in this area to responsible to the impact felt by residents, including by reopening alternative access and build a bridge with higher elevation to prevent the main route from being submerged by flooding.
