"I need to disclose that for the first time ever we will nominate an Indonesian for the post of deputy director general (of WIPO)," Laoly noted in a written statement released on Saturday.
Laoly spoke of him and Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi having concurred on nominating an Indonesian candidate for the post. The candidacy will serve as a milestone for the Indonesian membership of the world organization.
"May the plan run smoothly, and for the first time ever, one of the Indonesian citizens will be among the deputies of the new director general of WIPO," he remarked.
Laoly, in the company of Director General of Intellectual Property Freddy Harries, flew to Geneva, Switzerland, on Saturday (Sept 19) to attend the annual meeting of WIPO to be held on Sept 21-29, 2020.
Indonesia’s participation in the world organization reflects the country’s significant attention to intellectual property rights, and every effort to protect them, he pointed out.
"This is part of our involvement in the international community. Intellectual property rights are not only the focus of attention of Indonesia but also several countries," he noted.
The minister highlighted that Indonesia had also cooperated with several nations, including China, South Korea, and the United States, in registering and protecting intellectual property rights.
Indonesia joined the WIPO in 1979, 12 years after the organization was established.
Indonesia has also ratified several agreements managed by the WIPO, including the WIPO Convention, Berne Convention, Patent Cooperation Treaty, Trademark Law Treaty, WIPO Copyright Treaty, WIPO Performers and Phonogram Treaty, Marrakes VIP Treaty, Madrid Protocol, and Beijing Protocol.
Indonesia officially became the 100th member of the Madrid Protocol in October 2017. Early this year, the country also ratified the Beijing Treaty on Audiovisual Performances.
