Jakarta (Antaranews Kalsel) - The government will encourage the use of crude palm oil (CPO) for power plants next year.

"I further encourage next year we try CPO power plants," Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Ignasius Jonan said here on Monday.

The minister said he had seen an example of using CPO as fuel for power plants in Italy and hoped that if this is done in Indonesia it could reduce the cost of producing electricity.

"The current cost of PLN diesel engines is around 15 to 20 cents US dollar per kWh. If we use CPO, the cost might go down," he said.

He added that the use of CPO as a fuel for electric power plants is expected to reduce the import of petroleum fuels, the consumption of which is increasingly large due to the increased volume of vehicle use.

"Besides being more environmentally friendly, it also reduces fuel imports," said Jonan.

The desire of the ESDM Ministry to try the CPO power plant was conveyed by Jonan when he was a guest speaker in the 2019 Business Challenges.

The event was not only attended by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, but also attended by Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi.
