Plasma Farmers Are Recommended to Breed Cattle

Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan 8/2 (AntaranewsKalsel) - A member of Commission II for Economy and Finance of South Kalimantan Legislative Council (DPRD) Suripno Sumas encourages plasma farmers in oil palm plantations to raise cattle.

Because oil palm plantations and cattle raising could bring in a double income and would highly support family economy, he said in Banjarmasin on Wednesday.

While doing oil palm plantations and raising cattle at the same time is not too heavy. "It can even be profitable," he said.

Waste of oil palm plants, such as frond and fresh fruit bunches can be woof  for cattles, so not much to pay to buy the animal feed.

"Based on animal husbandry expert, by consuming feed derived from palm oil waste cattle fattening can accelerate," she quoted.

On the other hand, cow manure (including its urine) can be fertilizers or increase fertility to oil palm plants, which means less funding for fertilizer, he said.

Regarding cattle seed, according to him, can use the gadu system, which is provided through livestock assistance from the provincial or a local government.

The provision of such cattle can enter the meat self-sufficiency program in an effort to support local and national food security in general, he added.

He estimated that if all the oil palm farmers in South Kalimantan combine their plantation with raising cattle, the meat self-sufficiency can be achieved to meet the needs of local consumption.
