Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan (AntaranewsKalsel) - Deputy Chairman of the South Kalimantan Legislative Council H Hamsyuri SH has a notion that the province has a potential to develop seaweed cultivation, mainly in three districts in the eastern region.


"But the potential of marine resources have not been utilized to the maximum," said the representative of the people who had just returned from accompanying members of Commission II overseeing economic and financial affairs for a comparation study to Waingapu, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), 9 - 11 May.

Former Head Sub-district of Pulau Sembilan, Kotabaru, admitted amazed to see the activities of Waingapu people in seaweed farming and processing to support the increase in income and welfare of local communities.

"Since the presence of seaweed processing factory in Waingapu about eight years ago (2008) cultivation of commodities continues to grow. Initially only 1,001 employers, is now more than 4,000," he said, citing the manufacturer.

While the price of seaweed is quite promising, as in Waingapu, with a distance is about a flight from Kupang, the capital of NTT, Rp6,000 per kilogram for wet seaweed.

While cultivation is relatively easy, by the age of 45 days can be harvested, and does not require high technology, so that ordinary people can carry out such business, Hamsyuri said.

Meanwhile, three districts in the eastern region of South Kalimantan which have the potential to develop seaweed, namely Tanah Laut (Tala), Tanan Bumbu and Kotabaru. They have a long coastline and extensive blend with the Java Sea, Celebes Sea and the Makassar Strait.
