The Basirih final waste disposal (TPA) on Jalan Gubernur Subardjo, South Banjarmasin, involved 200 or more garbage collectors (pemulung) to handle plastics waste.

So far, Head of the Technical Implementation Unit (UPT) of The Basirih Landfill Nurhidayanto said here on Friday (June 14), the pemulungs handle 5 tons of garbage each day. "90 percent of it is plastics garbage," he pointed out.

By recycling garbage, the pemulungs have considered of being helpful in handling of waste, while the volume of garbage has reached 350 ton every day thrown into the landfill.

"The garbage collectors actvities here have been helpful to decrease the pile of waste. At least 5 tons goes out of here everyday to be reused," he remarked.

That is why, the UPT does not apply levy on them. Although, he said, a little social donation is collected each time they bring out goods, but the donation will goes to them selves.

"For example for their Idul Fitri bonus, or as fund to help their sick or die or wedding, etc," he explained.

The Basirih landfill which covers 20 hectares, from 39 hectares land available, deploys five excavator to handle the garbage. It produces methane gas to be distributed to the neighborhood residents.
